July 2009 Yes! Go Green! newsletter from Cathy Theys: Sunscreen, IL Compost Law, Kids and more

---------------- Welcome ----------------

This is the fifth issue of the Yes! Go Green! newsletter from Yes!
Training and Education, LLC (aka: Cathy Theys). I promised not to
email too often...

---------------- What I'm Up To! ----------------
I compost! But what about your kids school?
Illinois sent an important bill to the Governor, SB99, allowing food scraps to be composted in Illinois. It will be nice to see businesses, organizations, and schools composting their food scraps and organic matter.

STILL on my todo list:
Getting my soil tested in my vegetable garden.
Here is a link to test sites in Illinois:

Try your local University Extension office for other states.

(The rabbits ate my baby corn plants anyway!)

I'm still collecting data from my Kill-a-wall

And I'll keep you posted on that project!

Speaking about worries about contaminates...

It is hard to find a sunscreen that is not toxic!
We use California Baby:

or http://tinyurl.com/mceqnt
I find the EWG website really helpful!
The Environmental Working Group's Sunscreen Guide:

Or skip the sunscreen. Lately people have been stopping my family on the street and asking where I got the sun hats my kids are wearing. The secret: they are not made for kids!

Sturdy because they are made for outdoors adults, but they work great for kids. It cinches up to fit their head, and it has a clip to keep them from loosing it when they take it off, or when the wind blows really hard! How is the hat Green (beside the greenish color)? Less sunscreen to buy (not none, but less). Reduce the number of sunscreen bottles you buy by a few this summer and that means: more money for you, less stuff to manufacture, less packaging to throw out! Use the hat year after year!

Support your family and friends who want to breastfeed. Its Green!

And in the news: it reduces the mother's risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 50 percent.

Green your menstrual period! The Diva Cup (Too taboo? Just skip this part. Questions? Email me, I'll give you a candid review!)
